"I turned down The Crown, obviously, because Imelda needs some work."Īnd no, I'm not taking over Drag Race, in case you were wondering. So to be a gay man that's in drag and accepted as a comedian, and to get to travel the world, for me has been insanely amazing and completely positive. I mean, for myself in particular – for me to be identified as what I am, which is a comedian in a wig, you know? We so long have celebrated people like Dame Edna, Flip Wilson, and all of these people that do drag.

What positive shifts have you seen impact drag in recent years? Who can keep up with it? If anybody knows everything about all the seasons, they're f**king insane. I often get asked, obviously, about the current seasons, which I don't watch, so I don't have an opinion. It varies where you are, and in places like the UK, Australia and America, you've got to work harder, because they've heard everything you've said before.

Obviously, when you're going to Brazil, and there's a language barrier, that might be more what they want to hear. "The things that always hit hard are any time I say something negative or truthful about Drag Race." I don't know if a plague is what caused people to go, "Oh, let's go see this bitch before she dies." So I think it's just people who are either really desperate, or they think I'm funny. And, also, the most dates and the largest crowds that I've had. This particular tour is probably the largest I've done out of the five solo tours I've done. Would people come out? Do people care that I'm a drag queen performing? What's happening?īut shockingly, the response was amazing. I was a little sceptical, because of the pandemic and people not working. So as things started to get back together, Unsanitized kind of fell into place. I don't think anybody knew when they were going to work again. And I didn't know when I would work again. Everything shifted, and the world went a little crazy. Something about being offended.Īnd then obviously the world stopped. I don't know what the hell I was calling it. At the time, it wasn't called Unsanitized. I was finishing up Jamie the musical, in the UK. It's been a wild transition, because I was originally supposed to tour this show right before the pandemic. Sure, straight performers like Dame Edna and Flip Wilson have dressed up as women in their acts, but Bianca is one of the first queer performers to break through and serve clown realness in that same way (with Lily Savage being a notable exception, of course).ĭigital Spy caught up with Bianca Del Rio to discuss her Unsanitized tour, and why she turned down the very first winners season of Drag Race All Stars.Ĭongratulations on the success of your Unsanitized tour! What can UK audiences expect when you come over in May? In the eight years that have passed since season six aired, Bianca Del Rio has forged an enviable comedy career, one which rightly legitimises the queerness of drag in this arena. No matter how many talented competitors – and winners – follow, Bianca will forever remain a Drag Race icon, and not just because she won The Best Season Ever™. "We've got to thank all the horrible people that have been on the show since season six."īut in a franchise that pumps out queens faster than Bianca snatched that crown, Ms Rio truly is one of a kind. "We have to thank all of the other shitty seasons that make me look better," Bianca retorts as we fangirl over the phone. Ten seconds into our chat, it immediately becomes clear why Bianca Del Rio is held in such high regard, even if she (jokingly) doesn't hold other queens to the same standard.
